Becoming a death dealer will make her a pariah among her own people, but she’s desperate. Unfortunately, the only death dealers she finds are Luke, a boy her own age, and his younger sister, Darla. Luke has been trained as a death dealer, but he’s not that experienced. He’s not sure he’s strong enough yet to train someone on his own. But the people who killed Darla’s family are still after her. There’s no time to wait two weeks for their family to return from the retreat they’re attending.Luke agrees to train Colina, and she undergoes the three trials, but her Awakening brings powers neither anticipated. In fact, she manifests powers no one has seen before—something that leaves us with a cliff-hanger ending, which I hate.
Colina is a strong young lady who overcomes a myriad of obstacles. She’s not co-dependent on any sparkly vampires or overly-buff werewolves. She’s really a good role model for modern young girls, and I would have liked to have given these books a higher rating. But, again—even though they’re part of a series, I believe books should be written to stand alone.

A healer who wants to avenge her family's death by learning Death Magic is an interesting premise. There are a number of questions remaining at the end of this story...which is no doubt intended to drag readers into the rest of the series.
This is a fun page turner, I enjoyed reading it. Good character background, interesting and original premise. When I finished book 1, I couldn't wait to start the next in series.
I did not give it the full 5 stars because the book seemed a bit long-winded. That being sai, the book was extremely well written and grabs ahold of the reader from the begining. Sucks you into the world of the book, and you can imagine you are the main character.
Wow what a page turner. I could not put this book down. You can feel the characters emotions with all they go through. If you want a good paranormal read that keeps you on the edge of your seat with action, suspense, twist and turns, do read this series.
I typically don't like paranormal books, but this book was entertaining and very difficult to put down. The characters and plot were great. There was a twist that I didn't see coming. There were some editing errors. Overall, very well written.
Book 1 had errors throughout and the characters where so naive and poorly written. The plot was okay, but the female character was so bad I had a hard time finishing the book. The author was repetitive in explanations and vague in everything else. I do not recommend.
This book was enchanting. Not in a whimsical way, like fairies and princesses. No. But in a dark, engrossing way. The character of Colina was probably the most genuine I've read in a while. The main reason being her reactions. Too many times I read books and something huge happens in the storyline and the character somewhat just glosses over the issue. Colina reacted in the most human way possible. She had natural thoughts and feelings about things. Natural curiosities with new concepts that came up. This might seem like a very trivial thing, but there are so many books that the character doesn't ask questions that would be natural, or isn't concerned with large plot twists, or sometimes overreacts to trivial things. This book through me for a loop with the plot and the ending. It was a riveting read and I am already on the second book and oh my goodness is it already fantastic.
